Inside the New Tribune office, a teenage girl with wide-rimmed glasses and freckles on her olive skin watched Ivy and Bishop with round, fearful eyes. She was drowning in her oversized sweatshirt, her shoulders slumped as if she was trying to disappear into her clothes. Ciara, who sat next to her on the couch, wrapped her arm around the girl's shoulder and rubbed her back as the girl took deep breaths to calm herself.

“I’m sorry I didn’t show up the other day.” The girl’s voice was mousey as her eyes darted around the room in panic. “I’m just not sure I want the attention that will come with telling my story… The Wardens are more dangerous than people realize. I’ve learned that firsthand.”

Bishop stepped closer to her, his forehead wrinkled. “Oh, we are going to make them realize it. But we can’t without victims coming forward and speaking their truth.”

She peeked up at him. “But why would anyone believe me?”

“The more people who come forward, the harder it will be for Kane to deny.” Bishop's voice was a little too loud. Ivy worried Bishop's eagerness would scare the girl.

“Kane will still deny it…” she whispered. “They believe everything he says.”

“He can take content down from the internet,” said Bishop. “But he can’t censor our paper so easily. There's a reason we share the news in print.”

The girl leaned forward, putting her elbows on her legs and her head in her hands. Ivy felt a twinge of empathy.

“Bishop,” Ivy whispered. “She’ll tell her story when she’s ready.”

“Ciara mentioned that I could share anonymously?”

Bishop hesitated then nodded. “Yes, you can, but that does make it easier for readers to dismiss the truth.”

“But we want you to do whatever you need to do to feel comfortable,” said Ciara. “Even if we don’t print a story, we want whatever information you have. It can just be a private conversation.”

Bishop chuckled nervously. “Ciara, we are going to have to print a story.”

“We don’t have to do anything,” Ciara challenged.

“I agree with Ciara,” Ivy spoke up. “Eventually, we’ll find someone who will want to share on the record. Right now, we just need to learn the truth.”

Bishop looked at Ivy with pleading eyes. “Ivy, this is our one shot to get rid of Kane. We need to tell the world where to find the missing 15. Very few people make it out of that place alive, and I'm sure their families are worried.”

Ivy walked over to Bishop and took his hands, which seemed to calm him. “Give us some alone time with her.”

“Girls only,” Ciara added.

Bishop's shoulders sank. He scoffed and huffed as he let himself out of the room.

Ivy turned toward the girl, who sat up straighter when Bishop was gone.

“I’m sorry about that. He can be a little enthusiastic at times.” Ivy hoped her presence was a comfort.

“All the time.” Ciara rolled her eyes.

“I can’t do this.” The girl wiped a tear from her cheek. “I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

“You don’t have to do this,” Ivy assured.
